And so I shall: Amber Snell, came to TGMR June 3rd, 2017. She has given long hours( some days were over 11hr, 8hr 9hr days for example. She dedicated herself to helping coordinate and assist with Ranch Camp 2017, 3 weeks of Ranch Camp for underserved children, and special needs,"emotional" & behavioral concerns for these children. Amber is very genuine and compassionate to both the children and our "therapeutic animals at the ranch. Amber volunteered her time, when a seasoned volunteer needed to pursue employment and was consistently unavailable to help at TGMR. In addition, Amber has volunteered a whole weekend of a large event at Burnside Plantation recently. Here Amber assisted Kathryn to organize at least 9 volunteers each day of the weekend, where TGMR did horse/pony,and donkey cart rides for all the children at AppleDays! Then Amber participated in taking all the children around the large pasture with the donkeys or horse or pony for 6hrs straight. Total of 320 hrs since June 2017. Amber really does deserve this recognition. This is, for her dedication and contribution of time and experience for the well being of all the people TGMR serves and our animal rescue population. Well Done Amber!

2017 Award winners

Sandy Kelly/UPS Youth Scholarship, honoring a high school senior who has made a meaningful volunteer contribution.

Winner is Mia Bobenko

Mia has been volunteering at Gress Mountain Ranch for 8 years steadily and consistently even doing 8-10 hour shifts when needed. Mia has helped Kathryn in times of ER, going to the vet with a sick animal, helping with "treatments" for the animals, helping with an "enema for "Pyschokitty", or helping Kathryn give IV's to Andrew Alpaca or Clarence the turkey. Her true Love is Ranch Camp, "Caring for the Children" created by Kathryn. A summer day camp held several weeks in the summer with other volunteers and children from 2nd grade thru 12th grade. Mia has been able to train and orient new volunteers especially with "equestrian psychotherapy". This is all done with the supervision of Kathryn Gress, founder of TGMR. Mia has exceeded all the expectations and is extraordinary as a junior volunteer for TGMR. She is always available for the numerous fundraisers, and events to help "operate" TGMR. Mia is a "solid" foundation to assist the ranch to function with adverse weather, community outreach projects, working with those on probation, or helping to manage and coordinate our Open Gate Farm Tour and Ranch Camp for the children.
"Mia is my right and left hand lady, She has gone above and beyond the call of duty" says Kathryn Gress. Mia deserves to be recognized for this award. Recently, she was accepted to Delaware Valley University for veterinarian schooling. Mia's goal is to be a "large animal vet".

In Mia's words, "I consider Ranch Camp to be one of the most involved and rewarding events. Preparing for camp has taught me a lot about public relations, advertising, organization, and time management. Running camp itself has taught me leadership skills, more organization, building connections with the children and multitasking. The friendships and experiences we get to spend with the children is the most rewarding. Our campers are so amazing and have so much to teach us and it is a joy to be able to work with them and their amazing talents they bring with".
They all LOVE Mia! Mia has worked long and hard from being a very young girl at age 9yrs to the present day experiences and needs at TGMR. We are the most fortunate to have Mia as our "shining star" volunteer.

I saw your post on free-cycle (sorry, no microwave to donate ... I'm sure you will get one quickly thru f-c!) ... but was intrigued by what the post stated... so looked up your website. I'm still resettling into this area & job hunting, but have been on the look-out for potential volunteer opportunities. looking forward to getting back in touch with you once I'm in a position to make such a commitment.

Animal-Assisted Activities with therapy animals, like at TGMR encourage reminiscence and social interaction and result in stress relief and incidental physio-therapy. Medical studies and research presents that blood pressure may be lowered and even hospital stays shortened when patients have access to the human-animal bond. Often, just helping the animals and "talking to the animals" can be the high point in your day and transform your mood and thought pattern. Animals of all types can certainly bring happiness and a sense of calm and well-being.
